Instructions & Care for your Oil Candles

Thank you for purchasing my hand made oil candle. I hope it gives you many years of pleasure. For ease of use, please take a moment and read the instructions below.

Burning and caring for your stone candle

The candle is designed to burn all of the oil in the reservoir.  The height of the candle flame can be adjusted by allowing more or less of the wick to extend from the glass collar.  The more wick that is exposed, the higher the flame.  For indoor burning, set the wick to be about even with the top of the glass tube.  I have found keeping the wick even with the top of the glass tube will give a warm glowing light and a “candle” size flame.  A short wick will provide a smoke-free flame.  Outdoors, in a light breeze, set the wick height at about 1/8” above the top of the glass.  That should withstand a 12 mph breeze.  Over that, pull the wick out approximately 3/8” and the flame should withstand up to a 20 mph wind.  If the flame smokes, the wick is too high.   Over time, you might notice a slight carbon build-up on the tip of the fiberglass wick.  This is easily removed with a fingernail or even a paper towel.

Make sure the candle is out and the wick and glass tube has cooled before touching them.

Filling and re-filling your stone candle

Carefully remove the glass insert and wick from the stone (do not remove the wick from the glass insert).   Using the “squirt” bottle provided, insert the tip of the bottle into the hole.  YOU MUST LEAVE ROOM FOR AIR TO ESCAPE AS YOU ARE FILLING THE RESERVOIR.  Use the line on the bowl as a fill guideline.   I recommend the use of Ultra-Pure Paraffin Oil*. The reservoir will hold approximately 3 fluid oz. of fuel when full.  DO NOT OVERFILL.  Keep a paper towel handy to wipe off any excess oil from the top of the candle.  Gently pinch the end of the wick and replace the glass insert and wick twisting as you slide it back in.  Ultra-Pure Paraffin Oil is available locally at hobby, hardware and craft stores, or on line.  You may purchase and use scented oils, such as Citronella.

DO NOT USE AN ALCOHOL OR PETROLEUM BASED FUEL.
